COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHEDULE.
Joyful Quilters (Community Service) meets at the
Calico Cat from 10:00 to 2:00 several times a month. If you are interested in
quilting or sewing on a Joyful Quilters quilt, please
contact Judy Gage at agage12345@aol.com to arrange pickup of the quilt at the Calico Cat and
current schedule of days we meet to sew.
At the June Business Meeting (June 11), we gave
66 quilts to the Royal Family Kids Camp for this year’s
campers. They were kind enough to present the guild with a
wonderful donation of $1000.00 as a thank
you for 10 years of quilt donations each summer for the campers to
be used for much needed new tools and supplies for making these
wonderful quilts!
Thanks to your generosity, we are also able to
provide the following quilts:
15 to the Auburn Children’s Home Society of
Washington
34 to Mary Bridge Hospital
11 to the Auburn YWCA for emergency and transitional
housing
11 to the Valley Breast Center at Valley
Medical Center
1 to the Auburn Respite Program at the Auburn
Senior Center
and 1 to the Children’s Therapy
Center.
Fragrance-free completed quilts will be accepted at
any guild meeting.
Please do not use fabric softener if you wash the quilt
before you turn it in.
Thanks again for your support to Joyful
Quilters.

A Little Bit About Community
Service
We are committed to making quilts to provide
comfort and warmth to those in need. Through the years and the
tremendous Community Services leadership and dedicated volunteers
like you, we have made hundreds of quilts which we donate to various
organizations and agencies such as oncology units at hospitals,
breast cancer treatment centers, Habitat for Humanity, and
hospice. We make a large yearly donation of 66 quilts to
the Royal family Kids Camp, which provides quality week-long outings
for foster children in the Puget Sound area. We have also
donated dozens of quilts to non-profit organizations to use as
raffle quilts to raise funds for their use. Community Service
has a small budget to purchase those supplies that are not donated
by Guild members. Guild members generally donate fabrics and
batting. The Committee puts together kits to sew, as well as
tops to quilts to bind. They meet during the day at least
monthly at someone's home or at a local quilt shop to work on the
quilts. They generally do not meet in summer. Members
are encouraged to make and donate quilts on their own.

Who We Provide Quilts
To
Annually, Evergreen Piecemakers
has a commitment of 66 quilts for Royal Family Kids Camp, a camp for
foster children who receive a quilt to take home at the end of
camp. These quilts
should be in the range of 44-50” x 54-72” in size in kid-friendly
fabric. Unisex quilts
are great. These quilts
need to be done by the end of May – just before camping
season.
At this time, no other
organization has been identified as needing quilts on an annual or
other recurring basis.
In the past, we have provided quilts to Habitat to Humanity,
Ski for All, various oncology centers, breast cancer treatment
centers and other special interest organizations. If you know of an
organization that would like to receive quilts from us, please let
Jeannie Hunt know.
The following information would
be helpful when requesting
quilts:
- Name of the
organization
- What the organization does –
who do they provide service to - gender and age of clients
- Size and type of quilts desired (i.e.
baby quilts, lap quilts, wheelchair quilts, queen
size)
- Number of quilts
needed
- How frequently are the quilts needed –
quarterly, annually, one time,
etc.
- Who will be responsible for
picking up or delivering the quilts to the requesting
organization
A form with these questions to be
completed when requesting community service quilts is available by
clicking here or
by going to the Forms section of this
website.
How You Can
Participate
There are many opportunities for
you to participate in Community
Service:
- Attend one of the Community Service
days at Calico Cat and Bernina Too. Activities vary but there
is always fun to be had.
- Make a quilt from start to
finish.
- Create kits, sew blocks, sew borders,
quilt the sandwich or sew on the binding. There is a task for you
now and in the future since the community need for quilts will
never end.
- Quilters for the Quilts are always
needed.
- If you are a long arm quilter and
would like to help quilt the community service quilts, please
let Jeannie Hunt know.
There is always a backlog of quilts to be
quilted.
- If you are just learning to
machine quilt, the community service quilts are perfect to
practice on.
- Provide needed
supplies:
- Cotton Fabric – prints and solids –
“kid-themed” prints are always needed. Please do not provide
fabric that is not suitable for our community service quilts
(fabric that will not stand up to the many washings that the
quilts will go through.)
- Thread – Star Cotton (large spools)
are great – in ecru or light
gray.
- Batting – The Warm Company products
are preferred as they can be quilted up to 10” apart. Look for Warm &
Natural, Warm & White, Warm Blend, Soft and White (in this
order). Please do
not provide other types of batting as they will not hold up
under the multiple washings that our quilts will go
through.
- Rotary cutters and blades – 45mm and
60mm
- Cutting
mats
- Sewing machine needles – size
12 or 14
