Why participate in a Round Robin Quilt?

  • Stimulates growth as a quilter
  • Builds confidence in doing our own quilts
  • Promotes caring and sharing among guild members
  • Challenges us to work with colors we might not ordinarily work with
  • Challenges us to think creatively to coordinate with a theme
  • Helps to make new friendships in the guild

Some groups will be doing “Border Beauties” a medallion type quilt, where the owner makes the center block, then each participant in the Round Robin group will add a border.  This will be a “Free-style” event.  You may make any block for the center (pieced or appliqué).  Any colors may be used.  The center can be any theme (Christmas, 4th of July, Summer, Winter, or no theme at all).  Other groups will opt to do a “Row” type quilt, where the owner makes a row, then each of the other participants will add a row to the original row.

Some Rules (Guidelines)

  • Please use 100% preshrunk cotton
  • The center block should be 12-15” (square or rectangular)
  • Include a yard (or more if you wish) of your main fabric(s)
  • Each additional border should be no more than 6” wide
  • Apply the “Golden Rule of Round Robin Quilting”:  Work on another person’s project as you want them to work on yours.
  • Be committed to keeping the schedule.  Please don’t be late with the round robin passes, as it leaves less time for the next person’s round.
  • Optional:  Send a label for participants in your Round Robin group to sign
  • Optional:  Send a small journal for participants to record notes, thought processes, experiences while working on your quilt

We will plan one year to complete our Round Robin quilt tops.  After groups are assigned, participants will have two months to decide on a center block pattern, select their fabrics, and complete their center block.  The blocks will then be passed to the next person in the rotation, who will have two months to complete her border (round).  The blocks will again be sent to the next person in the rotation, who will have two months to complete her border (round).  We will continue until all in the group have added their border.  The maker of the center block will not see the progress.  At the end of the year we will reveal our quilts to the maker of the original center block, who will get to keep it.

Remember:  No expectations.  Once you send off your center block, you give up control of the end product.  Be willing to be surprised!
